What college student out there does not listen to music at some point throughout every day? Why not go out and listen live? Not only are there options to listen live on campus at the University of Michigan-Flint, there are also many live bands that play at bars and restaurants downtown. Some are not local bands, but the members of the bands are locals and will come to do shows from time to time. “We have a lot of fun playing in the bars around town,” says local drummer Erik Friday, “it’s always great to kick it with people around our age too.”
Getting involved in local bands and supporting them is great for the community and allows for the chance to meet new people. Music is some thing that everyone uses to express their feelings or relates to in certain situations.The opportunities to get out and broaden your horizons in the musical sense are being put right in front of you.
From the hours of twelve to five, most day of the week, tucked away off the highways and main streets of the city of Flint, there waits adventure and creativeness on walls and screens. The Flint Institute of Arts offers such a wide variety of displays galleries and even hosts a College Town Movie Night!
There is an on-going calendar of events, displays, and exhibitions that the institute offers. For an afternoon of perusing and chances to get your own creative juices flowing this is the place to be.
This museum and theater are a fantastic way to experience a creative side to the city. As well as a wide variety of Flint Art the free movie nights offered to college students, with IDs, are a wonderful way to cap off an afternoon and evening full of art and friends.
“The movies are always different, but you always have a good time,” stated Elly Stoneburg, of Lapeer.
Now after all of that art and a movie to talk about the question comes up what should we eat? This is always a simple question that has a basic answer, most of the time. Getting to the answer to that question can be rather hard with certain groups. Add to the mix that you need a place to do your studying. On top of that let's say it is the middle of the night, we won't tell your teacher you're cramming.
For students this place is an essential one to find. Mega Classic Diner offers that and much more. They have a wonderful staff as well as fifties music and a hot coffee to keep you and the studying going late into the night. This diner is the place to be and is a great wi-fi hot spot for all that homework!
After the studying is done and the bellies are all full, you get to the weekend and the choices come up again as to where to go out for the evening for fun with friends. Downtown Flint offers such a wide variety of bars and pubs for students to have a place to unwind and catch up with friends. There are jazz bars, bars with live local bands, karaoke for the brave among the group, and even a few sports bars.
A favorite for the on campus students would be the one and only Churchill's. With the past year being a little rocky with the kitchen being repaired, Churchill's still kept things alive with live bands and a great intimate environment for nights full of enjoyable company.
A great night of food and the game can be had at Blackstone's Pub & Grill. This lively pub is a great place to hang out while being able to keep a close eye on the score.
If you are looking for the perfect place to hang out with an excited group of friends the place to head over to is The Torch. This is a low-key bar a little farther away from campus, but still offers for a perfect night to be with those closest to you.Flint offers a lot of opportunity for college students. There is the music around every corner that is rich with local talent, Artistic footprints that are just waiting to be walked in by a younger generation, movies and food to be enjoyed with those you care about most, and nights relaxing after a week of studying at local establishments.
The biggest thing that this city has to offer to these students, however, is not all fun and games, it is the chance to further their education at one of the campuses that is located in Flint. Mott Community College is a great place for students to start and the opportunity to transfer once finished with their associates degree.
The University of Michigan-Flint is a great campus to transfer to and offers an abundance in student life activities. There is something to get involved in for everyone.
"Whether you are an Ultimate Frisbee guy or a fraternity guy, there is always something for you to do," says student Andrew Smith.
Get out. Get involved. Now getting out is the problem. Not where to go or what to do. The options are all there waiting for you to take hold of them and go on your own little adventures through the city and through life. Flint has it all. And it is being offered to you.
